A Conversation with Author Doug Kari

HELLO AUTHOR DOUG KARI, WELCOME TO WORLDAUTHORS.ORG! TELL US WHAT DRIVES YOU TO WRITE? YOUR MOTIVATION AND THE PURPOSE OF YOUR BOOK(S)?
Writing for me is a passion – it’s something I feel called to do. I focus on true crime because the stories are about real people involved in elemental human drama: love and loss, good versus evil, and the quest for justice in an imperfect world.

WHAT DO YOU HOPE READERS WILL GET OUT OF YOUR BOOKS? HOW WILL THEY FEEL OR BE DIFFERENT AFTER READING IT?
I hope readers of The Berman Murders will be fascinated by the twists and turns, which at times seem fantastical. I’m also hopeful that despite the dark subject matter, reading the book will leave people with a sense that there’s enduring light.

WHAT BOOKS DID YOU READ AS A KID/YOUNG ADULT? WHAT ARE YOU READING TODAY? HOW HAVE OTHER AUTHORS INSPIRED YOUR WRITING?
Growing up I enjoyed well-told stories of all types. As a teen I loved Hemingway, Steinbeck, and Twain. Ernest Hemingway’s sparse style taught me that what you leave out is of equal importance to what you leave in, because the space provides room for the reader’s imagination. As for what I’m reading now, I just finished Sociopath by Patric Gagne, which ties into my latest project.

WHAT IS ONE THING IN YOUR BOOK THAT WILL SURPRISE READERS?
When I started investigating the deaths of Barry and Louise Berman in a remote corner of the California desert, I had no idea the case would eventually lead to the slums of Phnom Penh, where little girls are trafficked as sex slaves. Nor did I imagine what would happen when eight girls grew into women and confronted their tormenter.

WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON NEXT? MORE BOOKS?
My lastest project is about a case I covered for the Las Vegas Review-Journal, where a middle-aged construction supervisor in rural Nevada randomly kidnapped a young woman, and after sexually assaulting her, buried her in a pre-dug grave. What were the underpinnings of this horrific crime, who was the sensitive and creative teenager who lost her life, and how did law enforcement and the family solve the case so quickly?
