Interview: Producer-Songwriter Knightlight
HI KNIGHTLIGHT! THANKS FOR TAKING THE TIME TO CHAT WITH US! PLEASE TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF, WHAT IS YOUR MUSICAL BACKGROUND? DO YOU HAVE A MUSICAL FAMILY OR DID YOU JUST FALL INTO SONGWRITING ALL ON YOUR OWN?
My family is not from a musical background! I am the first person to do something with music! But they support me fully and encourage me to get my music out there as much as I can! I got into songwriting after years of wanting to try it out! Music has always been such a therapeutic and significant part of my life! I started music in 2018 at 14, and now I’m 16 with three tracks released into the world and two remixes as well!
WHAT INFLUENCED YOU TO BE A PRODUCER-SONGWRITER?
I have always been interested in the process of creating and releasing a song, I wanted to give it a try, and when I did, I didn’t want to stop! It is such a fantastic process that allows you to express yourself in the most straightforward yet unique ways!
WHO INSPIRES YOUR PLAYING STYLE? WHICH ARTISTS CAN WE REFER TO?
There are so many artists that inspire me! Whether I only hear one song from them or listen to every one of their songs, I can get inspiration from everyone. However, I have to say there are two artists to inspire me the most! Cher Lloyd is my biggest inspiration! Her work ethic and persistence are so admirable! She never gives up on her goals and always gives it her all! She has been a huge role in my inspiration. Afsheen is also another big inspiration! He follows me on my Instagram, and we talk through DMS! He is always there when I need feedback or want to talk!
WHAT IS YOUR TYPICAL SONGWRITING PROCESS?
I never really think of songwriting as a process, I genuinely get a lyric idea or a word comes to mind that I think would be such an interesting song title! For example, my latest single ‘Last Fall,’ which is the first song I’ve released, which is written, produced, mixed, and co mastered by me, came about when I randomly had the title ‘Last Fall’ in my head. I found a beat online and wrote to it! Then I transformed it into a totally different vibe!
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR YOU TO WRITE A SONG?
Since I am so new to songwriting, and I’ve only written about ten songs, It can take me a while to complete a song, but I can finish a song in maybe an hour when I am inspired. One of my favorite things about writing a song is how there are no rules to it! You can take, however long you need to! There’s no use in rushing your craft!
DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR ASPIRING SONGWRITERS?
If I had to give advice, I would say to dive in! There’s no other way to start but to try it for yourself. No one can prepare you to song write. It’s such a free process, and no tutorial on youtube can ready you because there are no rules.
