Mahalaxmi Vrat is one of the most important Hindu observances dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth and prosperity. This 16-day-long vrat (fast) is believed to remove all obstacles and attract Goddess Lakshmi’s blessings. The culmination of this vrat takes place on the Ashtami Tithi (eighth day) of the Ashwin month in the Hindu calendar. This year, the final day of Mahalaxmi Vrat falls on September 24, 2024.

Mahalaxmi Vrat holds immense significance in Hindu culture. It is believed that fasting and worshiping during this period brings divine blessings, wealth, and happiness to the devotee’s household. Traditionally, worshipers offer prayers to Goddess Lakshmi, depicted in her ‘Gaja Lakshmi’ form, seated on a lotus atop an elephant. Devotees perform rituals with great devotion to honor the goddess and seek her blessings.

Important Dates and Timings for Mahalaxmi Vrat 2024

According to the Hindu Panchang, the Mahalaxmi Vrat for 2024 began on the evening of September 24 at 5:45 PM and will continue until the evening of September 25, 4:44 PM. Some devotees may choose to observe the vrat on either of these days, depending on their convenience.

    Rituals and Puja Vidhi (Procedure)

To perform the Mahalaxmi Vrat Puja, devotees begin by cleansing themselves and their homes early in the morning. The following are key steps to the puja:

    1. Prepare the Puja Area: Create a lotus design using turmeric at the place of worship.
    2. Install the Idol: Place an idol or image of Goddess Lakshmi seated on an elephant (Gaja Lakshmi form) at the puja site.
    3. Offerings: Devotees offer fruits, flowers, and various delicacies like Malpua, which symbolizes sweetness and prosperity.
    4. Kalash Setup: Place a clean water-filled Kalash (a sacred pot) with a betel leaf and coconut on top.
    5. Worship Essentials: Include sacred items such as the Shree Yantra (a geometric symbol associated with Lakshmi), coins, and a lotus garland.
    6. Prasad: Prepare special offerings like kheer (rice pudding) and light 16 diyas (lamps) to conclude the ritual.

After the puja, devotees chant the mantra “Om Shri Mahalakshmyai Namah” to focus their minds and deepen their connection with the goddess.
