The fifth panel of The RV Book Fair 2025 offered an engaging exploration of fantasy, history, and self-discovery under the theme Magic, Adventure, and Identity – Tween & Young Adult Journeys. Hosted by Lucia Matuonto and Pat Backley, the conversation brought together authors Jacqueline Kopito and Simon Rose, whose works speak to young readers through very different yet deeply connected forms of magic.
Simon Rose discussed the origins of his historical fantasy novel The Order of Excalibur, which blends Arthurian legend with World War II Britain during the Blitz. By weaving mythic artifacts and wizards into a real historical crisis, Rose uses fantasy as a lens to explore identity, resistance, and moral choice. His careful research grounds the story, while the magical elements heighten its emotional and thematic impact for young adult readers.
Turning to middle-grade fiction, Jacqueline Kopito shared insights into Twintastic in Miami, a whimsical yet emotionally grounded novel that follows twins Alix and Jordyn as they navigate magic alongside the realities of tween life. Kopito emphasized the importance of balancing fantasy with authenticity, allowing readers to recognize their own experiences in stories that still sparkle with imagination.
Themes of identity and courage anchored the discussion. Kopito highlighted the challenge of giving her twin protagonists distinct voices while honoring their shared journey toward self-acceptance. Rose reflected on how folklore and magic in his work serve as metaphors for real-world stakes, encouraging young readers to think about who they are and what they stand for when faced with difficult choices.
Both authors agreed that, despite differences in tone and setting, their stories are connected by a desire to empower young readers. Whether facing middle-school drama or wartime danger, their characters discover that courage comes in many forms—and that identity is shaped through choice.
The panel concluded with thoughtful advice for young readers: Kopito encouraged tweens to trust their voices and embrace what makes them unique, while Rose expressed his hope that readers of The Order of Excalibur walk away reflecting on the power of integrity and resilience.
Lucia Matuonto closed the session by thanking the authors, the audience, and her co-host Pat Backley, marking their fourth book fair together. She also extended appreciation to WorldAuthors.org, a valued partner supporting The RV Book Fair 2025.
This panel stood as a reminder that stories—whether playful or epic—help readers of all ages find magic, meaning, and connection.
