Many years ago, in the city of Indraprasthapur, lived a Brahmin named Vedsharma. He was married to Leelavati, and together they had seven sons and one beloved daughter, Veeravati. Being the only sister among seven brothers, Veeravati was deeply cherished and spoiled not just by her parents but also by her brothers.
When Veeravati grew older, her parents married her to a worthy Brahmin boy. After her marriage, while visiting her parental home, she decided to observe the Karwa Chauth fast for her husband’s long life along with her sisters-in-law. But Veeravati could not endure the hunger and weakness of fasting. She fainted and collapsed to the ground.
Seeing their dear sister suffer, her brothers became restless. They knew that as a devoted wife, she would never break her fast until she saw the moon, even if it meant risking her life. So, they devised a plan to trick her into believing the moon had risen. One of the brothers climbed up a faraway banyan tree, holding a sieve with a lamp behind it.
When Veeravati regained consciousness, the brothers took her to the rooftop, pointing out the glow of the lamp behind the sieve, and told her that the moon had risen behind the tree branches. Veeravati believed them. She offered her prayers to the lamp as if it were the moon and broke her fast.
But as soon as she began to eat, a series of inauspicious signs appeared. In her first bite, she found a strand of hair. In the second, she sneezed. And with the third bite, a messenger from her in-laws arrived, summoning her home.
When Veeravati reached her husband’s house, she was horrified to find his lifeless body. Overcome with grief, she wept bitterly, blaming herself for making some mistake in her fast. Her sorrowful cries reached Goddess Indrani, the wife of Lord Indra, who descended to console her.
Veeravati asked the goddess why such a tragedy had befallen her on Karwa Chauth and pleaded for her husband’s life. Moved by her devotion, Indrani explained that because she had broken her fast without offering arghya (water) to the moon, her husband had met an untimely death. Indrani then advised Veeravati to observe a fast on every Chauth day of the month, including the next Karwa Chauth, with complete sincerity and rituals. She assured her that by the merit of these fasts, her husband would be restored to life.
From that day, Veeravati observed each monthly fast with full faith and devotion. In time, the power of her penance and accumulated virtue brought her husband back to life.
करवाचौथ कथा (हिंदी संस्करण)
बहुत समय पहले इन्द्रप्रस्थपुर नामक नगर में वेदशर्मा नाम के एक ब्राह्मण रहते थे। उनकी पत्नी का नाम लीलावती था। वे दोनों सात पुत्रों और एक प्रिय पुत्री, वीरवती, के माता-पिता थे। सात भाइयों की इकलौती बहन होने के कारण वीरवती अपने माता-पिता और भाइयों की लाड़ली थी।
जब वीरवती बड़ी हुई, तो उसका विवाह एक योग्य ब्राह्मण युवक से कर दिया गया। विवाह के बाद जब वह मायके आई, तो उसने अपने पति की लंबी आयु के लिए अपनी भाभियों के साथ करवाचौथ का व्रत रखा। किंतु वीरवती व्रत की भूख-प्यास सहन न कर सकी और कमजोरी से बेहोश होकर गिर पड़ी।
बहन की यह दशा देखकर भाई व्याकुल हो उठे। वे जानते थे कि वीरवती पतिव्रता है और चाँद देखे बिना अन्न-जल ग्रहण नहीं करेगी, चाहे उसकी जान ही क्यों न चली जाए। तब सभी भाइयों ने मिलकर एक योजना बनाई। उनमें से एक भाई दूर एक वट वृक्ष पर चढ़ा और छलनी के पीछे दीपक रख दिया।
जब वीरवती को होश आया, तो बाकी भाई उसे छत पर ले गए और दीपक की रोशनी को दिखाकर बोले कि चाँद निकल आया है। वीरवती ने उसे सच मान लिया और दीपक को चंद्रमा समझकर अर्घ्य देकर अपना व्रत खोल लिया।
जैसे ही उसने भोजन करना शुरू किया, अपशकुन होने लगे। पहले निवाले में उसे बाल मिला, दूसरे में उसने छींक दी, और तीसरे निवाले में उसे ससुराल से बुलावा आ गया।
जब वीरवती अपने पति के घर पहुँची, तो वहाँ उसने अपने पति का शव देखा। वह रो-रोकर विलाप करने लगी और अपने आप को दोष देने लगी कि व्रत में कोई भूल हो गई है। उसकी करुण पुकार सुनकर भगवान इन्द्र की पत्नी देवी इन्द्राणी प्रकट हुईं और उसे समझाया।
वीरवती ने देवी से पूछा कि करवाचौथ के दिन उसके साथ ऐसा दुर्भाग्य क्यों हुआ और अपने पति को जीवित करने की प्रार्थना की। देवी इन्द्राणी ने समझाया कि चाँद को अर्घ्य दिए बिना व्रत तोड़ने के कारण उसका पति अकाल मृत्यु को प्राप्त हुआ है। उन्होंने वीरवती को सलाह दी कि वह वर्ष भर हर माह की चतुर्थी का व्रत करे और करवाचौथ पर भी पूर्ण श्रद्धा और विधि-विधान से व्रत रखे। देवी ने आश्वासन दिया कि उसके पुण्य से उसका पति पुनः जीवित हो जाएगा।
इसके बाद वीरवती ने पूरे विश्वास और विधिपूर्वक प्रत्येक मास की चतुर्थी का व्रत करना शुरू किया। अंततः उसके तप और संचित पुण्य के बल से उसका पति पुनः जीवित हो उठा।
