Born in 1883, William Carlos Williams was an American poet renowned for his unique style of writing and focus on everyday life. His poem, This is Just to Say, is a short poem known for its simple yet powerful imagery. In the poem, the poet leaves a note by the speaker apologizing for the plums that were saved in the icebox. Through honesty and candidness, the poet keeps the poem simple and easy to understand for everyone.

    I have eaten
    the plums
    that were in
    the icebox

    and which
    you were probably
    saving
    for breakfast

    Forgive me
    they were delicious
    so sweet
    and so cold
