When S. S. Rajamouli released RRR in 2022, the film became a worldwide sensation. It reached audiences across countries and languages, filling theaters and inspiring dance performances in the US and even a stage show by a top Japanese opera group. After such success, fans had high hopes for his next project.

Now, with the reveal of Rajamouli’s new film Varanasi, the wait is almost over. The first concept trailer hints at an even bigger story, blending mythology, history, and futuristic ideas into a huge adventure.

The trailer starts in the ancient kingdom of Varanasi in 512 CE. It quickly jumps to 2017, where a meteor heads toward a modern city. Next, we see Antarctic explorers finding a frozen ship inside an iceberg.

The timeline then jumps back to 7200 BCE, where a huge battle takes place. Warriors fight against gods as Lord Rama stands on a tall formation of men, shooting an arrow at a charging Lord Hanuman. These scenes show that Varanasi covers many different eras.

The trailer ends with Mahesh Babu riding a bull, holding a trident, and racing past huge pyramids. This quick look suggests the hero travels across continents and through time.

A Blend of Mythology, Adventure, and Science Fiction

Rajamouli has shared that the movie adapts part of the Ramayana, with Mahesh Babu playing both the legendary Rama and a new character named Rhudra. The villain, Kumbha, played by Prithviraj Sukumaran, is a science-fiction character who uses a wheelchair with mechanical arms like Doctor Octopus.

Rajamouli also said the film is inspired by Indiana Jones and Dan Brown novels, suggesting a treasure-hunt story that spans the globe. The teaser backs this up, showing scenes in Africa, India, Antarctica, and ancient settings.

Why Fan Theories Are Taking Off

Fans think there may be more dual roles in the cast. Since Babu plays both a god and a modern hero, some believe that Prithviraj Sukumaran and Priyanka Chopra Jonas might also have characters in both mythological and futuristic timelines.

With the film’s new logline, “TimeTrotter,” speculation is growing. Viewers are wondering if Varanasi means just the ancient kingdom, the modern city, or something deeper in the film’s time-travel story. Rajamouli named RRR after its three main stars, so fans are curious if Varanasi has a hidden meaning too.

A Possible Cinematic Landmark for 2027

Although the full plot is still unknown, Varanasi looks like a mix of mythology, action, and time travel, maybe even bigger than Rajamouli’s past films. With gods, warriors, explorers, future tech, and worldwide settings, people are already calling it one of the biggest movie events of 2027.

From the first look, Rajamouli seems ready to break new ground and show what an epic film can be.
