Suicide, the decision to end one’s own life, is not as commonly perceived a decision of a single moment. It is an accumulated despair, resulting from the tragic outcome of an endless list of sensitive moments that an individual lives through many times over. Yes, the world has always been a jungle, earlier it was all green, and now it is full of modern high-rises. Thus, one needs to embrace the belief, “Survival of the fittest.”

One of the most important solutions to this mental menace, which breeds deep within, is to shrug off the hard moments by defining, nurturing, and embracing a purpose, and living life to its fullest. Here, early guidance through parenting, education, mentorship, community living, and mindfulness directed toward meaningful goals helps remove shadows of negativity that can lead to suicide. It is true that when societies emphasize material gain, superficial supremacy, or manipulative power, the human mind drifts into chaos, isolation, and self-destruction. The importance of defining a life purpose should begin early. Education should be more than just an academic brush-up to earn a living, it should develop self-belief, instill values of resilience, service, and clarity of thought toward life and the role one desires to perform and contribute to the broader human family.

Time-to-time supervision by teachers, counsellors, and parents is a must to help young people navigate challenges before they multiply into unmanageable crises. Finland, as an outstanding nation, has experimented with and developed an educational process that moves away from competitive racing and towards meaningful living.

Community living is the best workshop for training minds to become great contributors, cultivating a healthy thought process that seeks not war but peaceful coexistence. The simple act of living together and eating meals together fosters bonds of belonging. Unfortunately, the trend in the West has been individualistic and has demoted community practice. However, some sections of society did realize and correct it. A study in the United States revealed that families who regularly dine together report lower levels of depression among adolescents. The table becomes a safe space where feelings are shared and silent struggles noticed.

Similarly, participation in community events, whether sports, volunteering, or religious gatherings, creates an involuntary counselling zone. In traditional Indian villages, collective festivals and shared meals naturally acted as buffers against loneliness, whereas today’s urban societies often neglect these practices, leaving individuals trapped in isolated apartments, scrolling through devices but disconnected from real human warmth.

Materialism has been elevated as the only pursuit, and in a world obsessed with wealth laundering, financial supremacy, and showcasing power, the human soul has taken a back seat. The culture of comparing possessions and positions has triggered a vicious whirlpool that serves as an eternal quagmire.

Psychologists note that suicides in developed nations like Japan or South Korea are often linked to professional and financial failures, where identity is defined in terms of income. The same pseudo-materialistic scaling is seen in India’s student suicides, where marks and ranks are treated as the sole measure of worth. Over-expectation, jealousy, greed, and desire for more become endless pursuits, and those who are ambitious yet stumble feel hopeless and, unfortunately, embrace suicide.

The negative influence of media and films cannot be ignored, as glorifying self-destruction, toxic love, or violent revenge often implants dangerous ideas in half-read, naïve, and impressionable minds. The controversial Netflix series “13 Reasons Why” (2017), which portrayed teenage suicide, is a sad reminder, as studies later revealed that suicide rates among teenagers in the US spiked in the months following its release. Instead of providing solutions, the show inadvertently glamorized despair. Media, if unregulated, becomes not a tool of awareness but a silent promoter of hopelessness. Thus, it became a lesson for media houses to serve positivity.

Religious thoughts and traditions across the world, right from Buddhism’s emphasis on mindfulness, to Christianity’s focus on divine love, to Hinduism’s concept of dharma, remind individuals of a greater purpose beyond temporary failures. Spirituality, when genuine, restores meaning and instills patience. There are many recovery stories of individuals who found strength through prayer, meditation, or faith-based communities.

Yet, in today’s world of manipulative power mongers, spirituality too has been hijacked. Pseudo-democratic systems and cult-like organizations often use religion not to heal but to control, weaponizing faith for political or financial gain. Instead of promoting meritocracy and disciplined living, many distorted practices exploit gullible and vulnerable followers, leaving them disillusioned and dismayed.

To prevent suicide, one needs to adopt a disciplined lifestyle underlined with a genuine purpose. Human beings require more than bread and shelter, they require belonging, clarity of thought, and dignity. When purpose is absent, emptiness prevails and misguides. When communities neglect shared responsibilities, alienation grows to the extent that it becomes fatal. Similarly, when education transforms into a mechanical form, young minds lose direction. Later, when materialistic endeavours and acquisition overshadow inner fulfilment, self-belief and confidence die.

In Japan, the practice of “Ikigai”, the belief in having a “reason for being,” has led to longer life expectancy in Okinawa. When individuals live with a sense of meaning, whether in their profession, craft, or family role, it reduces suicidal tendencies. Unfortunately, in India’s Kota, where the sole purpose of many students is to crack exams, suicides have multiplied, showing what happens when purpose is reduced to a narrow definition.

Another example is France, where secular individualism has replaced traditional family bonds. Suicide rates there have risen and remain higher than in Italy, where community meals and familial gatherings are still common.

Time-to-time cultural and community exercises are a must, and through such interactions families should prioritize emotional conversations as much as material provisions. Schools must design curricula that integrate mental health awareness, mindful resilience, and promote healthy discussions about the meaning of life. Governments need to monitor and regulate media portrayals to check negative narratives. Spiritual leaders must realize their responsibility toward society, through service, discipline, and compassion, rather than manipulating for hidden reasons. Workplaces must emphasize balance, mentoring, and community over endless competition.

Above all, individuals must learn to pause and redefine their personal purpose regularly. The purpose of life is not static, it evolves with age, experience, and circumstance. For some, it may be professional achievement, for others, family care, and for still others, creative contribution. What matters is not how grand the goal is but the presence of a goal itself.

The purpose of life is like a compass, directing individuals through storms of despair. Without it, the mind drifts aimlessly, gullible and vulnerable to the currents of negativity.

Suicide prevention should not only be about helplines and therapies but also about educating and cultivating a purpose, a commitment to community, and meaning in life. It is essential to counter materialism with the higher purpose of serving humanity, thus transforming meals, schools, and neighborhoods into zones of mutual learning, counselling, and care.

Life, when guided by purpose, ceases to be a burden. It becomes a journey where struggles become chapters and not a conclusion. The journey, with the togetherness of family, community, and positive faith, keeps one and all away from the negativity that often misguides toward self-annihilation. Suicide prevention surely lies in ensuring that one is inspired to live with a sense of dignity, direction, and humane positivity.
