Award-winning Portland singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Kathryn Grimm is back with a catchy new pop-rock single, “Goodbye To The Blues.” The song is lively, uplifting, and freeing, capturing how love can change everything.
The single is all about celebrating joy. Grimm calls it a “feel-good song describing how effortlessly the joy brought on by being in love can erase any sorrows.” She also says, “The bliss—my favorite state to be in. It’s impossible not to be moved by the groove of the driving bass, the lilting melody, and the message—love and the blues cannot coexist.”
With an energetic rhythm section, layered guitars, and Grimm’s strong, soulful vocals, “Goodbye To The Blues” mixes catchy pop with rock edge. Its lively sound and positive mood show how love can push sadness away.
Kathryn Grimm’s career shows her depth and versatility. Early on, she started her band “GROUP THERAPY” with her friend and fellow guitarist, the late Jeff Buckley. Playing with Buckley is just one of many highlights in her career.
She also shared memorable creative moments with blues pioneer Bo Diddley, jamming between takes while filming Rockula. Another defining moment came when Al Hendrix personally contacted her after hearing her interpretation of “Spanish Castle Magic,” offering his blessing—a gesture she describes as a true honor.
Grimm was also the featured guitarist in Michael Bolton’s video for “Dance With Me,” which helped build her reputation as a talented and respected musician.
A Rich Discography
Grimm’s music covers blues, rock, and jazz. Some of her standout releases include:
- No Cash Blues — her latest album, produced by Dennis Moody (known for work with Diana Ross and Missy Elliott), featuring scorching guitar work and an accomplished roster of players.
- Blues Tools — includes a rare track showcasing Jeff Buckley’s distinctive slide guitar.
- Grimm Again — an electric blues release distributed by Burnside Distribution, receiving global critical acclaim.
The Los Angeles Times praised her exciting stage presence, saying she “pummels crowds into a blissful heap.” Billy Hulting (Natalie Cole, Lou Rawls) called her the “Voice of an Angel… plays guitar like the Devil.”
Beyond recording, Grimm remains deeply active in the Northwest music scene. She leads multiple projects, including The Kathryn Grimm Band (KGB), The Jazz Rockets, Hippie Love Slave, and Babes in Portland. She also hosts a quarterly Blues/Jazz Jam and collaborates with select artists as a guitarist, bassist, pianist, vocalist, and songwriter.
Her songwriting extends into theatre as well, with several compositions featured in playwright Alan Alexander III’s award-winning production Homeless, The Musical.
Academically, Grimm holds degrees from The Guitar Institute in Hollywood and California State University, Los Angeles (BA and MA in Jazz Studies and Commercial Music), underscoring her technical depth alongside her artistic intuition.
With “Goodbye To The Blues,” Kathryn Grimm continues to blur genre lines while staying rooted in emotional authenticity. The single serves as both a musical statement and a personal philosophy: joy is powerful, transformative, and contagious.
In an era where music often mirrors uncertainty, Grimm delivers something refreshingly clear—a reminder that love, when genuine, leaves no room for sorrow.
