Television is one of the biggest forms of entertainment and information for decades. It has also been shaping cultural narratives and influencing societal thinking. Dramas, comedies, reality TV, or documentaries impact our thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors and influence our mindsets. Here are some of the ways TV shows influence our mindsets:

    Social Norms

Television works as a mirror reflecting what is happening in the society. It often happens that viewers get influenced by characters and storylines as they provide situations for how to act in various situations. For example, a show like Friends represents the value of friendships.

    Cultural Representation

One of the deepest ways TV shows influence our mindsets is through cultural representation. The diverse cultures, lifestyles, and identities are portrayed on screen which can cultivate understanding. On the other hand, lack of representation can lead to dogmatic approach among people and promote stereotyping as well. For instance, representation of Sikhs in the old movies was extremely stereotypical.

    Community Building

TV shows have the power to bring people together by sharing viewing experiences that build friends and families together to watch their favourite shows. Discussing the episodes, characters, and societal issues shown in the shows influence our mindsets.
