Bhangarh Fort, located in Rajasthan, India, is one of the country’s most haunted places. Its creepy atmosphere and mysterious legends have made it a place of fascination and fear. Due to its reputation, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has prohibited entry into the fort after sunset.

Bhangarh Fort was built in the 17th century by Raja Madho Singh I, the son of Man Singh I, a prominent general in Emperor Akbar’s court. The fort was once a thriving settlement, but today, it stands in ruins with an air of mystery surrounding it. The reason behind its abandonment remains unclear, but several legends attempt to explain the haunted nature of the place.

There are two main legends associated with the curse of Bhangarh Fort:

Legend 1: The Curse of the Ascetic

According to this legend, a powerful ascetic named Bala Nath lived in the area where Bhangarh Fort was later built. When Raja Madho Singh sought permission to construct the fort, Bala Nath agreed on the condition that the fort’s shadow should never fall upon his dwelling. However, one of Madho Singh’s successors expanded the fort, violating this condition. As a result, Bala Nath’s curse took effect, leading to the fort’s downfall and its haunted reputation.

Legend 2: The Tale of the Tantrik and the Princess

Another popular legend tells the story of Princess Ratnavati, known for her beauty. A sorcerer named Tantrik Singhia fell in love with her and attempted to bewitch a cosmetic she was to use, intending to make her fall in love with him. However, the princess saw through his plan and threw the bewitched substance onto a boulder, which then crushed the Tantrik to death. Before dying, he cursed Bhangarh, condemning it to ruin. Soon after, a battle led to the princess’s death and the fort’s destruction. Locals believe that the spirits of the dead still haunt the site.

    Paranormal and Mysterious Incidents

Visitors to Bhangarh Fort have reported hearing strange noises, feeling an invisible presence, and witnessing shadowy figures. Some claim to have heard whispers and screams, while others have felt an inexplicable sense of unease. According to local beliefs, those who enter the fort after dark do not return or experience terrifying encounters that leave them unable to explain what happened.

Due to its haunted reputation, the villages around Bhangarh Fort are built at a distance, and no houses have roofs, as it is believed that any roof constructed collapses mysteriously. The ASI has put up a board at the fort’s entrance warning visitors not to stay after sunset.

Despite its spooky reputation, Bhangarh Fort is a beautiful historic site during the daytime. It is situated near the lush green Sariska Tiger Reserve, making it a scenic spot for tourists. The fort has magnificent gateways, ancient temples, and palace ruins that showcase its former grandeur. The peaceful surroundings during the day make it a fascinating place for history enthusiasts and adventure seekers.
